American white pine bonsai. Pine trees are very hardy but still need to be protected during the winter when they are planted in containers. Pinus strobus is not a commonly used species in the bonsai world but this specimen had some attributes that made it unique especially. This is an eastern white pine collected in spring of 2017. Eastern white pine has soft blue green 3 to 5 inches long needles borne in groups of five although foliage colour varies greatly from one tree to the next.
Like all pine trees it is an evergreen that should be kept outdoors. This gives a soft almost feathery look. I have no experience with eastern white pine for bonsai but have heard the same as you. I would love to see your progress documented.
Juniper ponderosa pine as well as eastern broadleaved trees like maple and elm and hackberry collected by me. I say go for it if you have permission to collect it of course. It h as beautiful grayish blue needles and grows very slowly. This helps the first and second flush of growth develop and adds to decreasing the needle size needles grow longer if the tree doesn t get enough sunlight.
There is a good selection of western yamadori mountain trees like rocky mtn. Do not water the tree if the soil is damp or cool.
