Azalea bonsai care sheet. When flowering azaleas should be protected from rain and hot sun to make the flowers last longer. Check soil with finger to determine if water is needed. They are not as winter hardy as pines conifers etc but are not as tender as tropicals. As a guide around thanksgiving day it is time to prepare your bonsai for its winter dormancy period which should last approximately three 3 months.
Rainwater works best because azaleas respond poorly to water containing lime. Therefore your bonsai must be maintained in a cool cold environment during the winter season. Azalea bonsai require frequent watering. The flowering red azalea bonsai is a living miniature tree and not a house plant.
To water place in a pan of water and soak for an hour or two until the soil feels moist. Water only if soil feels dry to the touch. They are temperate trees and grow best in a mild climate. Azaleas thrive at a sunny spot but during the hottest time of the day in summer it is better to provide some shade.
Azaleas do not like any hint of dry soil so be sure to keep the soil evenly moist at all times. If allowed to do so the fine fibrous roots will quickly desiccate and die. Your bonsai needs watering. The tree should be watered at least once a day throughout the growing season to insure that the soil mass remains moist not soggy.
