The well known japanese jin liquid consists of lime sulphur which is mostly used for whitening the deadwood but also has some preserving effect. You can use a nylon brush scowering pad or steel wool to knock the sheen off if you dislike the look.

After 24 hours and glossy residue can be removed with a bonsai steel wire brush brushed with the grain. Apply directly from the bottles dispensing spout straight onto the wood and continue to apply so long as the glue soaks in. The superglue is carefully dripped over the deadwood and it soaks straight in in the same way that wood hardener does.
