It could also be a sign that the tree isn t getting enough light. Bonsai soil is balanced so that it drains quickly and does not hold as much water as normal gardening soil.

The top branches and all of the leaves however are suffering. It might be the case that the dry brittle leaves of your bonsai are not related to under watering. Wilt droop and brittle branches are true signs of an ailing bonsai. Once junipers become brittle they are mostly dead unfortunately.

A dry and brittle bonsai tree is likely not getting watered often enough. Not every bonsai can be saved from a dying state but with some care and attention your bonsai may have a chance.
