Repotting at this time can make space for the roots growth in spring. Take as much out as needed to fit the tree into the new pot. If you repot your bonsai in the fall it s already getting ready to go dormant for the winter and won t be as affected by the transplant. 3 in winter around the end just before spring is a very good time to repot your bonsai.
After untangling the roots prune back some of the longer ones to keep the tree from outgrowing its pot. After an extended period which varies according to several factors the plant will begin to suffer. This is called root pruning. Put simply because bonsai grow in a small volume of soil the tree will in time fill it s pot with roots.
Firstly it s important to take a kama or a bonsai sickle and go around the perimeter of the pot to detach the root ball. The downside is there s more chance of something going wrong especially with older trees.
